Microchipping

A permanent form of identification for lifelong protection

A microchip is one of the simplest and most effective ways to help ensure your pet can be returned home if they’re ever lost. Unlike collars and tags, which can fall off or be removed, a microchip provides permanent identification that stays with your pet for life.

At Reese Veterinary Hospital, we strongly recommend microchipping as part of routine preventive care for pets of all ages.

How Microchipping Works

A microchip is a tiny device—about the size of a grain of rice—that is placed just beneath the skin between your pet’s shoulder blades. The procedure is quick, safe, and similar to a routine injection.

Each microchip contains a unique identification number that can be scanned by veterinary clinics, shelters, and animal control agencies. That number is linked to your contact information in a national database.

Why Microchipping Matters

Microchipping:
  • Greatly increases the chance of being reunited with a lost pet
  • Provides permanent identification that can’t be lost or removed
  • Helps shelters and veterinarians contact you quickly
  • Offers peace of mind, especially for curious or adventurous pets

Even indoor pets can slip out unexpectedly, and microchips are often the key to bringing them home.

When Should My Pet Be Microchipped?

Microchipping can be done:
  • During a routine wellness visit
  • At the time of spay or neuter surgery
  • At any age, including adulthood

We’re happy to talk through the best timing for your pet and answer any questions you may have about the process.

A Small Chip, A Big Difference

Microchipping is a simple step that provides lifelong protection. Combined with collars, tags, and preventive care, it’s one more way we help keep your pet safe and connected to you.

If you’d like to add microchipping to your pet’s wellness plan, let us know during your next visit or when scheduling an appointment.
