Wellness & Preventative

The best medicine is prevention — and we’re here to help your pet thrive.

At Reese Veterinary Hospital, wellness visits are more than a quick check-up. They’re an opportunity to catch concerns early, strengthen your pet’s long-term health, and give you a clear plan for the year ahead. Preventive care helps pets live longer, reduces emergency surprises, and often saves money by avoiding bigger issues down the road.

Whether your pet is a playful puppy, a curious kitten, a busy adult, or a sweet senior, we tailor every wellness plan to their age, lifestyle, and individual needs.

What to Expect at a Wellness Visit

A typical wellness appointment includes a thorough, nose-to-tail evaluation and plenty of time for questions. Depending on your pet’s needs, we may cover:

Comprehensive Physical Exam
We assess your pet’s overall health and look for early signs of illness or discomfort, including:
  • Weight and body condition
  • Heart and lung evaluation
  • Eyes, ears, and oral health
  • Skin and coat condition
  • Joint and mobility checks
  • Abdominal palpation
  • Behavior and lifestyle discussion

Preventive Planning
We’ll talk through your pet’s daily routine and risks (indoors vs outdoors, travel, boarding, grooming, exposure to other pets, etc.) and create a simple plan that fits your household.

Early Detection
Many conditions are easier to treat when caught early. Regular wellness care can help us identify changes in:
  • Weight, appetite, and hydration
  • Teeth and gum health
  • Mobility and comfort
  • Skin conditions and allergies
  • Heart disease, diabetes, kidney concerns, and more

Vaccinations
Protection tailored to your pet’s lifestyle

Vaccines help prevent serious, contagious diseases that can be costly—or even fatal—to treat. We recommend vaccines based on your pet’s age, health status, and exposure risk.

Common canine vaccines may include:
  • Rabies
  • Distemper/Parvo (DHPP)
  • Bordetella (kennel cough)
  • Leptospirosis (lifestyle-dependent)
  • Canine Influenza (risk-dependent)
Common feline vaccines may include:
  • Rabies
  • FVRCP (upper respiratory complex)
  • FeLV (especially for kittens and at-risk cats)

Not every pet needs every vaccine every year. We’ll guide you with an evidence-based plan that’s appropriate and safe.

Parasite Prevention
Fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal parasites

Parasite prevention is one of the most important things you can do for your pet’s health—and for your family’s health, too. Many parasites can cause severe illness and some can be transmitted to people.

Flea & Tick Prevention
Fleas and ticks can lead to:
  • Skin irritation, infections, and allergies
  • Tapeworms
  • Tick-borne diseases
We’ll recommend a reliable preventive that fits your pet’s size, coat, and lifestyle.

Heartworm Prevention
Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and can be life-threatening. It’s far easier (and safer) to prevent than to treat. We recommend:
  • Routine heartworm testing
  • Year-round heartworm prevention

Intestinal Parasites
Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and other intestinal parasites are common—especially in puppies and kittens. We may recommend:
  • Fecal testing
  • Routine deworming when appropriate
  • Preventives that cover multiple parasites

Diagnostic Screening
Knowing what’s happening inside

Even healthy-looking pets can have hidden issues. Screening tests help us catch early changes before symptoms become serious.

Depending on your pet’s age and needs, wellness diagnostics may include:
  • Heartworm testing
  • Fecal parasite screening
  • Bloodwork (CBC/Chemistry)
  • Urinalysis
  • Thyroid screening (often for seniors)

For senior pets, routine lab work can be one of the best tools we have to monitor health and detect kidney, liver, thyroid, and metabolic issues early.

Nutrition & Weight Management
Healthy weight = healthier life

Weight impacts nearly every part of your pet’s health, including joints, heart function, stamina, and lifespan. During wellness visits we can help with:
  • Ideal body weight goals
  • Portion and feeding guidance
  • Diet recommendations (including prescription diets when needed)
  • Safe weight-loss plans

Small changes can make a huge difference—especially over time.
When Should I Schedule a Wellness Visit?

A good rule of thumb:
  • Puppies/kittens: multiple visits during their first year
  • Adult pets: at least once per year
  • Senior pets: every 6 months is often best

If you’ve noticed changes in appetite, behavior, energy, weight, thirst, urination, mobility, or breathing—even subtle ones—please call us. It’s always okay to ask.
